What is γ-PGA?
Originally discovered in the marine jellyfish, γ-PGA helps the jellyfish to store water in its fragile tissue and therefore it would not dehydrate in salty sea water.
Poly-γ-glutamate (γ-PGA) is  a kind of polypeptide in which glutamate is polymerized via γ-amide linkages.
    Today,γ-PGA can be gained from a beloved traditional Japanese food  'natto', the fermented soybeans. It can also be biosynthesed from L-glutamic acid using the microbe known as Bacillus subtilis.

Cosmetic application of γ-PGA
Because the polymer has free a-carboxyl group, it has high hydration power. when γ-PGA was applied to the skin, it would increase the amount of both pyrrolidonecarboxylic acid and lactic acid as the main components of Natural Moisture Factor (NMF).  That is, γ-PGA can bring out the moisture-holding ability from the inside of the skin.
     Given its natural origin and special properties, γ-PGA is also known as 'Natto Gum' and 'Collagene Vegetable'. Japanese MHLW and Canadian F&DA have already issued permits for its use in food or cosmetics with the license number EINECS NO.310-127-6 and 9079-0201 NATTO GUM, respectively.
